Mohammed Alhaj
A young Gazan artist born in 1982 in Libya to a refugee family from the village of Kawkaba. He holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts education from Al-Aqsa University in Gaza City and has completed numerous intensive training courses in drawing and sculpture.
His works encompass a variety of styles, including relief sculpture, black-and-white graphics, colorful graphics, and abstract art, allowing viewers to appreciate the implied concepts and themes within his creations. Al-Haj also has a particular interest in graphic and mural art and is a member of the Roots Contemporary Art and Palette Contemporary Art collectives.
His artistic practice navigates between different art styles and forms to address numerous concepts and questions highlighting the essence of the context in which live in. Al-Haj has participated in several group exhibitions both inside and outside Palestine and has held numerous solo exhibitions, including "Still Not Gone," which traveled through various Palestinian cities such as Bethlehem, Nazareth, and Jerusalem in 2019.
His recent project, "Transition," that he accomplished before the war started, foresees and captures the ongoing conditions of displacement and relocation faced by the population in Gaza today. As a displaced artist, Al-Haj continues to practice art, and his current works, in which he often positions himself, embody a spirit of hope and strength, and survival spirit. Alhaj lost his studio, along with many of his paintings and sculptures.
