Adel AlTaweel

Born in 1995 in the Al-Nuseirat Camp in Gaza City, Adel Al-Taweel is a visual artist who lived his entire life in Gaza before recently relocating to France. From a young age, he was exposed to the complexities of life in a refugee camp—an experience that would deeply influence his artistic journey. Adel found solace and expression in art, using it as an outlet to process and communicate the intricacies of his experience.

In 2018, Adel earned a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Al Aqsa University in Gaza. His time at university was pivotal, not only for his academic growth but also for his immersion in the Palestinian art community and contemporary art at large. Adel’s participation in various workshops and exhibitions has been instrumental in shaping his practice, expanding his artistic vision, and allowing him to blend his Palestinian roots with a broader, universal perspective. His work resonates with diverse audiences while staying true to his identity, exploring themes of displacement, identity, and the ongoing struggle of refugees.

Adel works in a variety of mediums, including painting, engraving, graphic printing, sculpture, and installation art. Through his work, he aims to highlight the lived experiences of those often forgotten by history—particularly those living in refugee camps and facing the constant challenges of displacement. His journey as an artist has been marked by numerous exhibitions, both locally and internationally. In 2024 alone, he showcased his work in several events, such as "Gaza in Our Mind" in the USA, "Ship2Gaza" at Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo, and "I DIED A THOUSAND TIMES" at the Sehateen Foundation in Paris. Through his art, Adel continues to push boundaries and spark conversations about identity, memory, and the ongoing struggle for justice. His exhibitions—whether abroad or in Gaza—make powerful statements on the state of the world today. In each piece, Adel invites viewers to reflect on the human condition, offering them a window into a past that remains very much alive in the struggles of those who continue to endure. Today, Adel Al-Taweel is not only an artist but a storyteller, using his platform to share the narratives that have been silenced for too long. With each exhibition, each stroke of the brush, and each installation, he brings attention to the realities of the Palestinian people, ensuring that their stories are told and remembered for generations to come. In the genocidal war on Gaza, Adel lost nearly all of his family members. He managed to escape to Egypt and then to Paris, France, where he continues to live and work as a contemporary visual artist.

"On the evening of Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at 8 PM, our house was hit by six missiles from Israeli occupation planes, without prior warning. Our three-story house, along with my older brother's adjacent house, was completely destroyed and turned to rubble over our bodies. My entire family passed away and is now with God—my father, mother, brothers Arafat and Osama, my four sisters Mona, Islam, Saja, and Doaa, my brother's wife, and their three young children, Saleh, Sham, and Seela. They all became martyrs on that difficult night. My brother and I were the only survivors of this bombing. I lost my family—12 pure souls—our homes, and my studio, which contained many of my artworks, the result of over 10 years of learning, creating, and producing. Everything ended in that moment."
