Mustafa Muhanna

Born in 1992, Mustafa Muhanna is a Palestinian visual artist based in Gaza, holding a diploma in Interior Design. In 2022, he earned a  diploma in Contemporary Art from Cooperación Española. In 2023, he launched the ongoing project Min Ar-Rokam (From Rubble). Muhanna is deeply passionate about contemporary art, particularly sculpture, and his works often reflect abstract and semi-realistic qualities, emphasizing symbolic expressions of complex themes.

He has explored various artistic mediums, including painting, sculpture, installation, and video art, with a particular focus on video work, which captures the immediacy of lived moments. His art frequently addresses issues related to youth and their relationship to society, focusing on human concerns, particularly those affecting individuals with disabilities. One of his most notable works, the Stalk and Crutch project, has been featured in several local exhibitions, including at the Gaza Art Gallery and the Shadow Imagination Gallery.

From Rubble (Min Ar-Rokam) is a sculptural project that began on November 1, 2022. It explores the relationship between the human body and architectural structures, attempting to merge them into a unified entity. The project delves into the fragility of demolished homes and the psychological impact of war on civilians, examining the emotional toll of such destruction. It seeks to inspire resistance, rebirth, and adaptation in affected individuals, encouraging them to rise from the ruins (rokam) and rebuild their lives. The project serves as a profound representation of the experiences of Gaza's people, who, after each devastating war, are forced to rebuild their homes and livelihoods from scratch. Muhanna’s work intertwines elements of damaged buildings with the human form to convey the surreal reality faced by Gazans in the aftermath of conflict.

However, the project became a casualty of war when Israeli occupation forces bombed the Shababeek for Contemporary Art ↗ building during the genocidal conflict, destroying (From Rubble) collection along with hundreds—if not thousands—of artworks by other artists. Despite this, Mustafa Muhanna remains resolute in his determination. He is now reimagining and recreating the project, ensuring it continues to serve as a powerful testament to the resistance and creativity that emerge from profound hardship.
