Majed Shala

A visual artist born and based in Gaza. He is a founding member of the Shababeek for Contemporary Art collective. Shala participated in the Summer Academy at Darat Al-Funun in Jordan (2000-2001), under the supervision of the late Syrian artist Marwan Qassab Bachi. He has held several solo exhibitions, including In the Presence of Nature at Shababeek Gallery (2016); Breathing Air at the Arab British Centre in collaboration with Arts Canteen, London (2011); A Bracelet from Gaza in Beirut (2004); and Gaza, the Nostalgia Place at the Village of Arts and Crafts (2003). He has also taken part in numerous local and international exhibitions, including the Biennale Revolution and Cohesion in Cairo (2011) and the Sense of the Spirit of China workshop (2017).

Shala’s artwork is deeply emotive, often depicting female figures to embody themes of pain, hope, yearning, and resilience. These expressions resonate strongly in the context of Gaza, where his art reflects the strength and endurance of those living under siege and experiencing the many devastating Israeli wars on Gaza.

Like many of his fellow artists and most of the people in Gaza, Majed Shala endures the pain of loss, displacement, and ongoing upheaval in the midst of the current genocidal war on Gaza. Within this context, his lost works express a longing for stability, inspiration, and strength amid this very harsh and ever-changing reality.
